Aspiring Chef: From Passion to Plate

Initially enrolled in a different university and program, Rayan faced a turning point when he realized that he wasn’t on the right path. Through moments of introspection and exploration, he stumbled upon captivating cooking videos that ignited a spark within him. This spark blossomed into a fervent passion for cooking, inspiring him to venture into the kitchen despite a few comical kitchen disasters along the way. “I tried cooking at home after watching those videos, and while I may have burned a few things, I discovered a profound joy in the process,” Rayan shares, emphasizing the beauty of learning through challenges. His culinary journey flourished as he cultivated an understanding of diverse ingredients and techniques, delighting in the aromas of fresh herbs and vibrant vegetables.

One of Rayan’s signature dishes is chicken stroganoff, which he lovingly describes as an easy yet delicious recipe that harmonizes simple ingredients like chicken and rice in a luscious white sauce. His enthusiasm radiates as he talks about the joy of creating meals that not only satisfy but also tell a story of his evolving skills.

Rayan is particularly inspired by the new Hospitality Education Center at Dar al-Kalima University. He believes it offers invaluable opportunities that extend beyond cooking, honing skills in customer service and recipe development from both Western and Eastern culinary traditions. A pivotal element of his training has been mastering knife skills and learning to identify herbs by their aroma and flavor. “It’s about staying calm and focused in high-pressure situations, which is essential in this field,” he reflects, demonstrating his commitment to growth and excellence.

As Rayan continues to forge his path at Dar al-Kalima, he cherishes the invaluable experiences that have made him feel at home in this nurturing environment. “It’s made me really comfortable being here,” he admits, his smile radiating warmth. One of his most treasured memories is stepping into the kitchen for the first time with his peers, an experience he describes as “wonderful” and foundational in building his culinary confidence.
