College Construction Update, Sept 2008

As the buildings continue to grow in both height and area, the construction site has expanded to allow more room for heavy equipment and the delivery of materials. The areas around the buildings are a hive of activity as the front-end loader creates a wide swath down the slope to enable more work on the auditorium.

Since the building is built into the side of the hill, there will be two basement levels. The term “basement” is somewhat misleading, since the front of the basement levels will actually be above ground, featuring large windows that will overlook Bethlehem and Hebron Road, whereas the rear of the floors will face a walkway and a retaining wall. The beautiful white facing stone that will give the building its finished look is already being applied to the exposed sides of the basement levels.

Meanwhile the “ground floor” is nearing completion. This area will have rooms for jewelry design and the gallery area where students’ work will be displayed. This gallery will also be used for visiting artists. It will be a real joy for students, faculty and visitors to have a place to go that is dedicated specifically to the fine arts that have always been an integral part of Palestinian culture.
