Excavation and foundation-laying continues at the construction site for the new Dar al-Kalima College buildings, on the hilltop campus that currently houses the Health & Wellness Center and Dar al-Kalima School. Since the groundbreaking celebration in April 2007, architectural plans have been revised, contractors hired and the work has begun. In a region where vegetation is scarce, an effort was made to preserve as much natural vegetation as possible.
Excavations have been quite extensive due to the steep grade, the bedrock being so near the surface, and the amount of below-grade material that has had to be removed. Most of the excavating took place in January 2008, with formwork and reinforcing for foundation footings being laid in shortly thereafter. By the end of March, the reinforcing of footings for Building 1 and footings and partial foundation for Building 2 were nearing completion.
In addition, the foundation for a large water feature or “pond” has been completed. The water for this pond will be collected in water collectors on the roof of a separate building, where it will be pumped to a recycling area. From there, the water will flow downhill to the pond and be recycled continuously. In such an arid climate this water feature will be not only a welcome aesthetic feature to the surrounding landscaping, but more importantly will provide a cool and refreshing area for students to gather and socialize between classes. With the expansion of the Dar al-Kalima campus, we expect to increase the capacities of all three institutions which share the grounds. College enrollment is expected to increase exponentially, with the admission of students into the new Multimedia and Graphic Design courses. |
