Finding Hope
When 26-year old Angie Saba is asked why she hasn’t ever emigrated from Palestine, she will passionately tell you, “Because I have hope!” Angie is a staff member at one of the Bright Stars of Bethlehem programs. She has been on leave from her work in Palestine for the last year or so in order to pursue her Masters studies in Strategic Communication Management at Concordia University in St. Paul, Minnesota. “I have learned so much through my classes like persuasive communication, interactive media management, innovative communication and so many more,” says Angie. While Angie is appreciative of her time of study in the United States she is looking forward to going home in the spring of 2012. “I miss life at the International Center in Bethlehem. I miss the passion. I miss the energy. And now when I go back I have a new way to communicate with even more impact to our tourists and visitors from the United States!” Angie’s enthusiasm is contagious. She adds, “I was introduced to the meaning of hope by my Pastor, Mitri Raheb, and through the many programs of Bright Stars of Bethlehem. I know the meaning of passion. I was born in Palestine for a reason and I have a calling... to benefit other people and build a community and have a better future.”

October 2011 In this issue: Extending care, extending life • New book by Rev. Mitri Raheb • Simple steps can mean so much • Upcoming events and trips Extending care, extending life Khalil and Georgette Alhouseini live in a simple, one bedroom house on top of the hill in Beit Jala. The view from their house is the separation wall. Georgette is 73 years old and she bakes pastries and cakes in order to help them survive. Khalil has heart disease and isn’t able to work... leaving Georgette as the sole breadwinner. Hope for a brighter future can seem lost in their day-to-day work for survival. In June 2008, Georgette heard about Ajyal, a program of Bright Stars of Bethlehem that serves people age 65 and older. Georgette began attending meetings, engaging in activities and building new relationships. “I was very happy to be able to get out of my house and be with the people, my neighbors,” she explained. The Ajyal "Generations" Elder Care Program began in 2006 as the first Parish Nursing initiative in Palestine and the Middle East. It started small within Christmas Lutheran Church in Bethlehem, expanded to serve elderly from all Christian denominations and is now reaching out to elderly residents of all faith backgrounds throughout Palestine. Ajyal combines spiritual, educational, recreational and health services to bring hope and healing to the elderly population. This is done through multiple programs and services including: Home and hospital visits by a parish nurse to offer basic care and companionship Weekly meetings offering educational and spiritual activities and a joint meal Regular recreational gatherings and outings Health awareness programs. When Georgette suddenly stopped coming to the events, the program manager visited her to find out why. Khalil was very sick and Georgette needed to care for him. Ajyal’s outreach program nurse began visiting them on a weekly basis to assist with medication, blood pressure checks and other basic health care needs. The nurse also discovered that Georgette and Khalil weren’t able to afford their membership contribution so, through gifts like yours, an established fund covers their contribution and they are able to participate. Georgette and Khalil have a deep appreciation for Ajyal. They said, “It has energized us, allowed us to reengage in the community and we no longer feel isolated, hopeless and helpless. We are active, happy and filled with the fullness of life and hope.”We need your prayers and your gifts to continue to respond to the needs that this important ministry provides to Bethlehem's elders. If you are interested in supporting Ajyal, please go to brightstarsbethlehem.org/donate or call Beth Nelson Chase at 888.277.1225 today to learn how you can help seniors like Georgette and Khalil. See what God is doing now in Bethlehem
Each year, Bright Stars of Bethlehem, and other friends of Bright Stars, sponsor more than six trips to the Holy Land. This authentic tourism opportunity is also a very real learning opportunity.
Nancy Baumgardner, who has traveled several times with Van Overbeke says, "The way our nation experiences the Palestinian people and culture is not real. Palestinian people are the most patient people in the world."
"And gracious and hospitable too," added Van Overbeke. "For many people, the first trip to Bethlehem is to experience the birthplace of Jesus and walk the paths that he walked. But what happens is a transformation to understanding what the Palestinian people live through."
The tours offered through Bright Stars of Bethlehem and their friends are designed to give a first-hand experience to life on the "other side" of the wall. They are also centered on meeting Palestinian people, building relationships and breaking down barriers.
During their most recent trip in June of 2011, Baumgardner recalls several members of her tour group saying the trip wasn't what they expected. "One participant had experienced an Israeli led trip in the past and commented that she 'didn't see any of this when I went before and I didn't meet any of these people.' It's so important to become attached to the living stones. You have to go there and you have to see."
Van Overbeke compares it to Jesus' invitation to come and see! "Jesus invites us to come and see with our eyes and hear with our ears and experience him today. To meet people is the key and the only way you are going to do that is to go there and hang out. Go walk the streets. Go talk to the person selling you falafel at the corner. Start conversations with shopkeepers, children and students."
If you're ready to come and see, it's not too late to join one of the many trips scheduled in the coming months. See our trip listing in this issue of Constellations or the event calendar on our website.
Come see what God is doing now in the Holy Land!
